月が西の地平へ姿を隠し、空が濃紺からその衣を変え始めた薄明の頃。
木立の中、一人の青年が立っている。青々とした空間に佇むその姿はどこか頼り気なく、寂しげなようにも見えた。木の葉が微かに触れ合う音、その遠くに、梟が巣へと戻る羽ばたき。風は青年の髪を撫で、耳飾りを小さく鳴らした。
青年はひとり、等間隔に並ぶ盛り土の一つを前にして立っている。その手に持つ杖を握り直し、口を開いた。

「バーバラ。マニングが今日、森を出る。……あの子はこの先、何を得るのだろうね」

応える者はいない。

「君の旅立ちも迷いがなかった。それでもこうして語りかける僕は未熟だ」

こぼれ落ちるように語られる言葉達は静かに、地面へと染み込んでいく。青年は一度、言葉を切り、視線をさ迷わせた。
