　そう頭では理解しているはずなのに、重い足を引きずるようにして約束の場所に向かう己は本当に愚かで浅ましいと思う。
　多分鉄鼠は時間になって朱の盆が姿を現さなくとも、何とも思わないだろう。仕事が押したと見るか、別に切れてもいいと思うか。とかく、表向きは胸倉を掴み罵声と拳を投げ合う仲の悪さが周知されているような間柄だ。
　きっとこれ以上嫌われることなどない。
　胸の奥にわだかまるもやもやを吐き出すように、無意識に溜息がこぼれた。
　傘の表面を叩く音よりも、降りしきる雫の勢いの方が耳につく土砂降りの夜。
　明かりの消えた宿の戸を控えめに叩くと、暫くしてから立てつけの悪いそれがゆっくりと開く。途端埃っぽいようなかび臭いような室内の空気が鼻について、朱の盆は店の者に気づかれぬようぐっと奥歯を噛み締めた。
