　ホラー作家オージュ・ウォゲが、表面だけを焼いたほぼ生焼けの厚切りトーストに黒ごまペーストの甘いトッピングを塗りたくりながら、目の前の少年らに尋ねる。

「妖怪・お化け……心霊現象・ソレ系の違和感体験などなど。あったら教えてよ」
「……何でですか？」マモが不審げに答える。

　マモはどうにも、オージュ・ウォゲに不信感を抱いている。幼い頃から知っている有名なホラー小説家、読者として楽しませてくれた『尊敬すべき作家』だから、仕方なく一応相手をしているだけの付き合い方をしている。

「え？　何かのネタになるかな、というだけの事だけど？」

　朝っぱらから「心霊話をしろ」と振ってくる異常性はさすがだな、とマモはオージュの淹れてくれたコーヒーをすする。味の奥でコーヒー以外の若干の謎の苦味を感じたが、先日のオージュいわく「マンドラゴラを煎じて混ぜ混んでるんだよ(笑)」だそうで。きっと今回も混入しているのだろう。
